People are pretty nonchalant about safety when it comes to using ladders. But injuries from ladders could be potentially fatal. The first step in protecting yourself from injury is proper set up. Keep these tips in mind:

Before you climb a ladder:
•	Make sure no overhead obstructions and power lines are in the way.
•	Lock or block nearby doors to keep people from suddenly or accidentally bumping the ladder.
•	Keep the area around the ladder base free of clutter.
•	Rest the ladder base on a solid, level surface.
•	If you’re working outdoors or in the grass, use a large board to level the surface and keep the ladder from sinking into soft ground.
•	Tie a straight ladder as close to the upper support point as possible.
•	Make sure the ladder extends three feet beyond the roof’s edge or support point when using a ladder to reach a roof platform.
•	Make sure stepladders are fully open and the spreader is locked.
•	Never use a ladder outside during strong winds or stormy weather.

Do You Drink Enough Water OR Are You Addicted to “Coke”? Let’s Get The Facts Straight . . .

Let me share with you the benefits and risks involved to drinking water and Coke . . .

•	75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
•	In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
•	Even mild dehydration slows down your metabolism as much as 3%.
•	One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pains for almost 100% of us.
•	Lack of water is the primary trigger of daytime fatigue.
•	Researches show that 8-10 glasses of water a day significantly eases back and joint pain.
•	A 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory and difficulty focusing.
•	Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of color cancer by 45%, slashes the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and reduces the incidence of bladder cancer by 50%.

Are you drinking enough water everyday?
•	In many states, the highway patrol carries 2 gallons of Coke in their trunk to remove blood from the highway after an accident.
•	You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke and it will totally dissolve in 2 days.
•	To clean a toilet, pour a can of Coke into the bowl and let the “real thing” sit for an hour and then flush it clean.
•	To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers, just rub the bumper with a rumpled up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coke.
•	To clean corrosion from car battery terminals, pour a can of Coke over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
•	To loosen and remove grease from clothes, empty a can of Coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent and run on a regular cycle.
•	Coke will even clean road haze from your car windshield.
•	The Active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid whose pH is 2.9. It will dissolve a nail in 4 days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a leading cause of osteoporosis.
•	The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for over 20 years.

In today’s age of health and fitness, more and more kids are involved in sporting activities. Although being part of a football, soccer or Little League team is an important rite of passage for many children, parents and their children could be overlooking the importance of proper nutrition and body-conditioning needed for preventing injuries on and off the playing field.

“The majority, if not all, sports are good, provided that the child prepares appropriately,” says Dr. Carl Heigl, president of the American Chiropractic Association’s Council on Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness. “Without proper preparation, playing any sport can turn into a bad experience. There are structural and physical developmental issues that need to be taken into consideration before children undertake certain sports.”

Highly competitive sports such as football, gymnastics and wrestling follow rigorous training schedules that can be potentially dangerous to an adolescent or teenager. The best advice for parents who have young athletes in the family is to help them prepare their bodies and to learn to protect themselves from sports-related injuries before they happen.

“Proper warm up, stretching and weight-lifting exercises are essential for kids involved in sports, but many kids learn improper stretching or weight-lifting techniques, making them more susceptible to injury,” says Dr. Steve Horwitz, an ACA member from Silver Spring, Maryland, and former member of the U.S. Summer Olympic medical team. “Parents need to work with their kids and make sure they receive the proper sports training.”

“Young athletes should begin with a slow jog to warm-up the legs and arms and stretch all the major muscle groups,” says Dr. Horwitz. “Kids involved in football, baseball, gymnastics and swimming should develop a routine that includes strengthening exercises for the abdomen, the low-back muscles, arms and shoulders.”

Proper nutrition and hydration are also extremely vital. “A student athlete may need to drink eight to ten 8-ounce glasses of water for proper absorption. Breakfast should be the most important meal of the day. Also, eating a healthy meal before and after practice or a game allows for proper replenishment and refuels the body,” adds Dr. Horwitz.

Young athletes today often think they are invincible. The following tips can help ensure your child does not miss a step when it comes to proper fitness, stretching, training and rest that the body needs to engage in sporting activities.

Encourage your child to:

* Wear the proper equipment. Certain contact sports, such as football and hockey, can be dangerous if the equipment is not properly fitted. Make sure all equipment; including helmets, pads, and shoes, fit your child or adolescent. Talk to your child’s coach or trainer if the equipment is damaged.

* Eat healthy meals. Make sure your young athlete is eating a well-balanced diet and does not skip meals. Avoid high-fat foods, such as candy bars and fast food. At home, provide fruit rather than cookies, and vegetables rather than potato chips.

* Maintain a healthy weight. Certain sports, such as gymnastics, wrestling and figure skating, require your young athlete to follow strict dietary rules. Be sure your child does not feel pressured into being too thin and that he/she understands proper nutrition and caloric intake is needed for optimal performance and endurance.

* Drink water. Hydration is a key element to optimal fitness. Teenage athletes should drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.

* Drink milk. Make sure your child has enough calcium included in his/her diet. ACA recommends 1 percent or skim milk — for children over two years old — rather than whole milk because of the fat content. Milk is essential for healthy bones and reduces the risk of joint and muscle-related injuries.

* Avoid sugar-loaded, caffeinated and carbonated drinks. Sports drinks are a good source of replenishment for those kids engaged in long duration sports, such as track and field.

* Follow a warm-up routine. Be sure your child or his/her coach includes a warm-up and stretching session before every practice, game or meet. A slow jog, jumping rope and/or lifting small weights reduces the risk of torn or ripped muscles. Flexibility becomes a preventive key when pushing to score that extra goal or make that critical play.

* Take vitamins daily. A multi-vitamin and Vitamin C are good choices for the young athlete. Vitamin B and amino acids may help reduce the pain from contact sports. Thiamine can help promote healing. Also consider Vitamin A to strengthen scar tissue.

* Avoid trendy supplements. Kids under the age of 18 should avoid the use of performance-enhanced supplements, such as creatine. Instead, they should ask their coach or trainer to include weekly weight training and body-conditioning sessions in their workout.

* Get plenty of rest. Eight hours of sleep is ideal for the young athlete. Lack of sleep and rest can catch up with the athlete and decrease performance. Sluggishness, irritability and loss of interest could indicate that your child is fatigued.

Chiropractic Care Can Help. . .

Doctors of chiropractic are trained and licensed to treat the entire neuromusculoskeletal system and can provide advice on sports training, nutrition and injury prevention to young athletes.

So you have a headache….Your eyes hurt, your forehead is pounding, your neck is sore and tight, your scalp feels as if it is being slowly removed, lights bother you, noise sets your teeth on edge, and then there are your children, the house, dinner, your husband/wife and the daily demands of life. You would like to stop the world and get off!

Thousands of children and adults are afflicted with this headache “thing”. As a matter of fact, headaches are the most common reason people seek chiropractic care. Headaches have been sold to the public as a problem which needs to be “treated”, as a disease, or some sort of condition. We have gingerly been taught to believe that headaches need to be remedied, that no mercy should be shown, that they are bad, and we should not put up with them. Millions of dollars of advertising are spent annually on the benefits of drugs for the treatment of headaches. And we have bought into this carefully contrived thinking.

So let’s look at this “headache thing” from a different perspective. The word “Headache” simply means – ache in the head. It is NOT a disease. It is simply an ache. A pain. A symptom. I am not even remotely making light of it though – this symptom can be severe and debilitating. It is said that there are different types of headaches; migraines, cluster, tension, occipital, sinus, etc. All of them seem to have a different pattern, location, severity, and, of course drug, to deal with it. This may come as a surprise to many of you, but this is a manufacturer’s reality. In other words, the pharmaceutical industry would like you to believe, and accept, the illusion that all of these headaches need to be treated. Why? Let’s see…There are billions of dollars of profit at stake. What a shock!

There seems to be no weight given to the idea that there might be a reason why a person might be experiencing headaches – no weight as to the “WHY”.

Let’s look at this closer. I mentioned that a headache is a symptom. It is simply your body literally “talking” back to you. We need to be able to interpret that language. Most people I meet are so busy treating their pain, that they forget that it has a reason for being. A headache is a sign your body produces to let you know that it is having a difficult time handling something. The vast majority of headaches are found at the base of the head or in the region of the temples or over the eyes.

As a profession we have found that the vast majority of headaches are simply signs of a vertebral subluxation – a distortion of some of the vertebrae of the neck area mostly affecting the function of the nervous system. You would be surprised to learn that 85-95% of all subluxations I see in adults and children can be traced to a difficult delivery. We call this Traumatic Birth Syndrome. Even an average, uncomplicated delivery can be traumatic for a child and can produce vertebral subluxations. Not a good thing!

These subluxations affect the manner in which the nervous system transmits information and can be very catastrophic. When this occurs, certain neck muscles are called into play to protect the nervous system from damage and you experience a “tension” headache. Very often, pain is transmitted to the face and people have been trained to think it is their sinuses at fault. They reach for sinus medication and the profit cascade begins. And then there is the temple, pounding pain – a migraine; again different drugs. And the headaches which come in clusters – cluster headaches; more drugs.

I am describing the vast majority of headaches. There are others, however, that are not caused by subluxations. These can be caused by diet and poor nutrition – hypoglycemia, for instance. I see many of these in my practice. Some are caused by an aneurysm, a disease process, toxicity, a tumor, etc. The point I am making is that no headaches should be taken lightly – it is always a sign that something is not OK.

If you or your child is experiencing headaches, a trip to East Earl Chiropractic should be a priority. Dr. Daniel T. West, Dr. Matthew A. Myers & Dr. Daniel E. Maybee will be able to do a case history, comprehensive examination and x-rays (if needed) to determine the reason for your headaches.

Did you know that lettuce helps women cut hip fracture risk? A study that was conducted links vitamin K intake from produce-mainly lettuce-to a lower risk of hip fractures in a group of middle-aged and older women. The results, printed in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, are from a 10-year study of more than 72,000 middle-aged and older nurses. The survey found that women who consumed at least 109 micrograms of vitamin K per day had a 30 percent lower risk of hip fracture than those who consumed less.

The study found that these food items contributed the most to dietary vitamin K intakes: iceberg lettuce (29%), broccoli (15%), cooked spinach (12%), cabbage (7%), raw spinach (6%), romaine lettuce (6%), Brussels sprouts (5%), kale and other greens (4%), and oil and vinegar dressing (2%).

Have you ever wondered why it seems to take a long time to complete the prescribed course of chiropractic care even though you may have been out of pain for a long period of time? There are normally three stages of care that you will go through during your course of treatment. They are Relief Care, Corrective Care, and Maintenance Care.

Relief care provides temporary relief from your symptoms or pain, but does not correct the cause.

Corrective care, on the other hand, takes longer because you are trying to correct the source of the problem. Some considerations in the length of this treatment are the condition and integrity of the patient’s spinal column, the age and physical condition of the person, and the age and severity of the problem. A complete correction is not always possible for everyone. Dr. West, Dr. Myers or Dr. Maybee will discuss with you the possibility of a complete correction for your case. If correction is possible, it normally takes one to six months of intensive care followed by three to 15 months of stabilization.

Maintenance care ensures that the integrity of the spine is being maintained. It involves a periodic checkup and adjustments as needed only.

What happens when you discontinue care?

Some people are just concerned about relieving the symptoms, while others know that a complete correction is best for their overall health. The choice is up to you, but you should discuss this with Dr. West, Dr. Myers or Dr. Maybee so that you know the facts as they pertain to your individual case.
